The City of Torrance is recruiting for a THEATER TECHNICIAN to join the Cultural Arts Center Theater Team! The Department This position is located in the Department of General Services. The Department provides quality services that support City departments in a manner which enable them to carry-out their community missions and provides these services in a cost-effective and efficient manner, which best serves the operational needs of City departments and the community. Responsibilities of the General Services Department include: Airport Administration Building Maintenance Central Services Cultural Arts Center Administration Custodial Fleet Services Graffiti Abatement Program HVAC / Electrical Warehouse The Division The Torrance Cultural Arts Center includes the Toyota Meeting Hall, the Torino Festival Plaza, the Ken Miller Assembly Room, the Ken Miller Auditorium, the James R. Armstrong Theatre, the George Nakano Theatre, the Pine Wind Japanese Garden, the garden rooms, and the Torrance Art Museum. Additionally the Center houses 4 dance studios with sprung hardwood floors, a large ceramics facility, a jewelry making studio, 3 art-making studios, and a music/drama room. The complex is managed by the City's General Services Department through the Torrance Cultural Arts Center Administrative Offices. The Position Under direction from the Stage Manager, the THEATER TECHNICIAN plans, organizes, and performs technical support activities for the Cultural Arts Center; assists in the safe operation and maintenance of theater sound, lighting, rigging, and related equipment and systems used in support of stage productions and related events; and performs related duties as required. The THEATER TECHNICIAN also ensures the safe technical operations of the Cultural Arts Center; operates and maintains equipment, materials, tools and supplies used in technical production and set design; evaluates equipment needs and notifies supervisor of need to repair or replace equipment; and troubleshoots theater equipment. Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: any combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatrical Production, and/or one to three years of experience in the professional field, including lighting, audio, carpentry, and running crew. The most successful candidate will possess Theater Technical Skills , which includes knowledge of modern lighting and sound equipment appropriate for theater use and set construction. A systems-rigging certification is preferred. Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions: Requires the ability to stoop; to reach; to stand; to crawl; to walk and sit for extended periods of time; to push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds; to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. On a frequent basis, requires the ability to climb stairs and ladders, and to kneel and/or crouch. Essential duties of this classification are primarily performed in a dynamic theater environment. Duties may include operations in other Torrance Cultural Arts Center facilities and/or off-site locations. Position requires availability to work irregular hours or shifts, weekends, holidays, or overtime as required. As a condition of employment, candidates must pass a background check.
